Edinburgh is getting ready for its annual celebration of all things Robert Louis Stevenson. Held on 13th November 2013, Robert Louis Stevenson Day (RLS Day) will celebrate the life and work of the author of Kidnapped, Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
The celebrations kick off this weekend with screenings of the Muppet’s musical interpretation of Treasure Island; ‘Muppet Treasure Island’ at The Filmhouse in Edinburgh on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th.
On RLS Day itself, the festivities go on all day at The Scottish Storytelling Centre, with ‘Tusitala: Teller of Tales‘. The Robert Louis Stevenson Club will be holding a day-long reading of Stevenson’s poems and short stories at this free event.
If you’re near The Writer’s Museum, why not pop in to see a local school creating a toy theatre, using passages from Treasure Island as their inspiration.
Local libraries will be participating in the event, with Blackhall Library holding a ‘RLS: Poetry for Children and Families’ event, with A Child’s Garden of Verse, being read by Poet-in-Residence Ryan Van Winkle. Over at Corstorphine Library, take part in a ‘Robert Louis Stevenson for Kids‘ craft event for 5-12 year olds.
At The National Library of Scotland, curator Andrew Martin explores the novel Treasure Island in ‘Robert Louis Stevenson and his Pirates of the Caribbean‘.
